Itinerary

On this tour we visit two castle locations used for filming the hit series Lallybroch Outlander, Castle Leathers and Craigh na Dun .  Based on the best selling novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander is filmed in a number of locations in castles and towns in Scotland.

1  Midhope Castle – Lallybroch

Lallybroch is the ancestral home of Jamie Fraser , filmed at 15th century Midhope Castle .

Filming took place at Midhope Castle near Hopetoun House . Midhope was built in the 15th Century and was built by John Martyne, laird of Medhope. It was rebuilt in the mid 1600s and remains much the same today. Visitors are able to admire Midhope from a distance as the interior is a void  , although exciting new plans to refurbish the castle and fit accommodation mean that  fans will be able to stay in Lallybroch in the future .

Midhope Castle is the external location for fictional Lallybroch, the family home of character Jamie Fraser , and it is located on the Hopetoun Estate .  Midhope Castle dates back to the 15th Century and fans are now able to go inside Lallybroch castle . Midhope Castle tours can be booked on

2.  Castle Leathers   ( Balvaird Castle )

In the Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood, Balvaird Castle appears on screen as “Castle Leathers”, serving as the imposing estate of Lord Simon Fraser.

The castle makes a stunning initial impact in the trailer for the Outlander prequel as we see Brian Fraser and Murtagh  on horseback riding past the castle at speed .

Young Julia finds herself bound to service there after her sudden and bewildering arrival in 1714. She performs maid duties under the watchful—and lascivious —eye of
Lord Fraser of Lovat , played by veteran Scottish actor Tony Curran ( Dr Who , Braveheart, Deadwood, Underworld Evolution ) , who harbours sinister intentions. She later attempts to escape, but is intercepted by Brian, who defends her and courageously accepts the punishment meant for her . Julia gives birth to her son at Castle Leathers .

3 . Craigh na Dun

The Craigh na Dun  standing stones are near Kinnloch Rannoch in Perthshire. Henry and Julia Beauchamp travel separately through the stones to the 18th century. On the south side of the Dunalastair Reservoir in Tay Forest Park under the gaze of the spectacular Schiehallion mountain, this is scenic Highlands at its best. You will recognise the mound from the roadside and it’s just a short walk out to the site. Kinloch Rannoch was used in numerous other scenes , mainly because it’s one of the most remote and beautiful areas in the country.

The standing stones in the TV series are set up for filming , but they are not there permanently .
