Sassenach

Episode one , series one Sassenach

Outlander was filmed in locations all over Scotland .

The opening sequence features Glencoe in the Highlands of Scotland .

Claire and Frank Randall are on second honeymoon in Inverness after the end of the war .

Claire is seen looking at a vase in a shop window.

These scenes in Inverness and Mrs Baird guest house were filmed in the village of Falkland in Fife .

Claire and Frank visit Doune Castle which , with a lot of Cgi made it much older and more ruined than it actually is.

Frank mentions his ancestor, and they go down into the cellar and have sex.

Jamie is seen looking at Claire in the window at the guest house . Frank sees Jamie and walks up to him but Jamie walks off.

Frank asks Claire if it might have been one of her patients .

Next day Claire and Frank watch the dance of druids at dawn at the stones . Claire notices the bluebells  and returns in the afternoon.

This is a major turning point in the story for Claire as she touches the stones and is thrown back 2 centuries .Claire finds Black Jack Randall standing at a stream and he grabs her . She is rescued by the Mackenzies and hides from the redcoat soldiers .

They all go back to Castle Leoch ( Doune Castle ) where Claire meets Jamie for the first time and fixes Jamie’s arm .

what does Sassenach mean in Outlander ?

Linlithgow Palace , Outlander tours ,

Sassenach means “stranger” , foreigner or “outlander,” and is a nickname that Jamie uses for Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser. It also refers to people of English descent. It can also be a derogatory term or insult , depending largely on how it is said and to whom .

Outlander‘s Claire Randall is called a number of unsavoury names ranging from witch to whore, but only one eventually becomes a term of endearment: Sassenach.

It means a foreigner. Actually, it’s a less than polite Gaelic word for an English person .

So how did it become a kind of pet name for Jamie to call Claire ?

It all stems from the fact that Outlander author Diana Gabaldon wanted some Gaelic in her story .

“Very early on I began doing research as much as I could into Gaelic. While I don’t speak Gaelic by any stretch of the imagination, we want a few little terms and sentences scattered around to give a flavour of the language,” Gabaldon said

Sassenach was one of those key terms.

“Well, I had this English woman showing up, and I did know that Sassenach is in fact a fairly derogatory term for someone who is a foreigner, but specifically for an English person given the long and acrimonious relationship between England and Scotland. So, it seemed natural that someone would refer to Claire as a Sassenach,” she continued.

Jamie eventually takes up the term for her, but he doesn’t mean it as an insult.

“To start with, she has a slight idea that it’s a derogatory term, but she knows he’s plainly not trying to insult her. He’s just pointing out that she’s strange,” Gabaldon says.

“As time went on, he adopted it as a term of endearment for her, and because one of the things and only one of the things that attracts him to her, is that she is an English woman. He kind of likes to think of it as ‘I’ve got one of their women.'”

Outlander season four spoilers: Stephen Bonnet star reveals new villain’s ‘unravelling’

OUTLANDER villain Stephen Bonnett is set to rip the Frasers’ lives apart in season four

Outlander season four opening credits given Americana theme

Outlander fans are getting more and more excited for the premiere of season four next month, which is set to plunge Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) into an entirely new world as they settle in the American colonies.

Viewers last saw the married couple washed up on the shores of North Carolina in the season three finale last year, following months of turmoil as they navigated their way across to Jamaica and beyond.

The new instalment will finally see Jamie and Claire enjoy a settle home life for a brief stint, but the arrival of Irish pirate Stephen (Ed Speleers) has the potential to ruin everything.

What’s more, the show’s latest trailer has teased Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) will make the monumental decision to go through the Standing Stones in a bid to find her parents.

This comes after the university student receives a stark warning from Roger Mackenzie (Richard Rankin) Jamie and Claire could be in danger, but it’ll be nothing compared to the horrors Stephen will inflict.

The psychotic character could be set to take a particular fancy to Brianna on the hit time-travelling series, but how will the plot progress? Surely Highlander Jamie wouldn’t let Stephen continue his reign of terror.

Shedding light on his character, the Downton Abbey actor hinted at the timeline to come.

“He’s a tricky man,” Ed told Glamour Online.

“There’s a lot of levels to him, a lot of layers,” he continued. “I think he has a very particular view on the world.

“Whether that’s due to circumstance, whether that’s due to nature, nurture, all of this — what actually he’s really about, who he really is.”

“It will all be unraveled all in good time,” the star added cryptically.

Exact details of the pain Stephen will cause are being kept tightly under wraps, but book-fans can already guess at the torment that’s ahead.

It’s unlikely the pirate will be a worse foe than the infamous Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), however his actions are set to have lasting consequences on the beloved Fraser family.

Meanwhile, The Spy Who Dumped Me star Sam has teased the first meeting between Jamie and his long-lost aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy) in the season opener.

The Scottish actor shared: “[Meeting Jocasta is] a really important moment [for Jamie].

“Jamie’s mother and father have always been a very strong presence in his mind, and in his life.

“For him to meet his last relative — and that she looks and sounds so much like his mother — is really big for him.”

English actress Maria went on to describe her character as “a woman who is clearly nobody’s fool, she doesn’t suffer fools gladly, although she sees them everywhere”.

“She can’t help but be attracted to this incredibly opinionated and empowered woman [Claire],” the actress then added. “She doesn’t meet women like that.”
