Blood of My Blood

What was Outlander Blood of my Blood boot camp ?

The Outlander: Blood of My Blood “boot camp” was an intensive training program designed to prepare the cast—especially the younger and newer actors—for the physical, historical, and emotional demands of their roles in the Outlander prequel series.

🔹 What Was the Boot Camp?

The boot camp was a multi-week immersive experience that involved:

  • Historical and dialect coaching – to help actors adopt accurate 18th-century speech patterns, including Highland Scots or period-correct English accents.
  • Horseback riding lessons – since many characters in the prequel live in a time when horses were the primary mode of transportation.
  • Combat and sword training – due to the show’s frequent use of duels, battles, and hand-to-hand combat.
  • Dance lessons and etiquette training – for portraying aristocratic or high-society characters of the era with authenticity.
  • Bonding and chemistry-building exercises – to help cast members develop the closeness and intensity of the relationships portrayed onscreen.

“We all met for boot camp before we started where we learned how to do all things Outlander. So ride horses, speak in a Scottish accent,” Scotland native Roy begins, to which Irvine, 35, jokingly adds: “Yours is really good, by the way.”

🔹 How It Helped the Actors

  1. Built Physical Confidence
Actors became comfortable in the physical world of the 18th century—whether on horseback, in corsets, or wielding swords—so these elements looked natural on camera.
  2. Created Immersive Authenticity
The immersive historical training helped the cast inhabit their characters more believably. Period mannerisms, body language, and speech became second nature.
  3. Strengthened Ensemble Chemistry
The boot camp built real camaraderie, particularly for the actors playing young Jamie Fraser (Jamie Roy) and young Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater), which translated into more emotionally resonant performances.
  4. Reduced On-Set Delays
With key skills like riding and swordplay mastered in advance, less time was wasted on re-takes or technical fixes during filming.

Roy continues: “Thank you. I’ve been working on it for a while. Since ‘93. Yeah. I think when you’re doing all these things together — which can be, you know, pretty tough and hard going and long days — it’s really conducive to bonding and getting close. So that definitely, definitely helped, didn’t it ? ”

Series stars Hermione CorfieldJamie RoyHarriet Slater and Jeremy Irvine opened up about the intense training they had before filming even started .

Slater, 30, adds: “And I think the fact that we all lived around the corner from each other as well in Glasgow, we were all around each other’s houses all the time, hanging out every weekend, which helps, I guess, on set — if you really actually like the people that you’re working with. ”
