Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Season 2, Episode 2: “The Veil of Time”

Story

The episode begins in 1920s Cambridge, where young Claire is preparing for an expedition with her guardian, Uncle Lamb. She keeps asking about her parents, and Lamb, who has been quietly searching for them, is starting to wonder whether he’s being fair to her. In the rush of packing, he never notices a newspaper story about a mysterious man with an unbelievable past. The man is Henry.

Henry is still confined in an asylum with patchy memories. A visitor familiar to Outlander fans , Mrs Graham, suggests the standing stones may work best around Samhain, which gives him a plan for reaching Julia.

Back in the eighteenth century, Julia is a guest at Castle Leathers, and she uses Lord Lovat’s absence to bring in the seer Maisri under the pretext of blessing the household. Her real aim is to learn how the stones work. What she hears is bleak: she has no gift of her own, and her chances of crossing again look very slim.

Ellen, meanwhile, returns to a hostile Castle Leoch. Her brothers are furious that she abandoned her engagement, and Colum is thrown when she reveals she knows he tried to have Brian killed. Rather than apologise, the family listens as she makes a practical case. If they back the Jacobite rising and it fails, the Crown could strip them of everything, but land held in Ellen’s name, since she has taken no part in treason, could survive. Reluctantly, Colum and Dougal agree to transfer Leoch to her.

Brian’s storyline runs on a separate track. He and Lovat travel the Highlands gathering fighters, and Brian wins over sceptical audiences by making a rabble rousing speech presenting Lovat’s flaws as ordinary human ones. Even Lovat is impressed, and shows something close to pride in his son, though it’s a chilling sort of approval. Brian and Murtagh finish the episode at Leoch during the Samhain festivities, where Ellen explains the bargain she made with her brother. Brian promises to wait for her.
