The Kelpies tourist attraction have been named as one of the top landmarks in the world

Top Scottish tourist attraction the Kelpies has been named among the most popular landmarks around the globe.

The Kelpies in Falkirk attract around 1 million visitors a year and was ranked tenth out of 16 iconic metal attractions across the sphere.

It is the newest tourist spot having only opened to the public in 2014. It stands at about 30 metres high and weighs 600 tonnes.

  Now, a new study from The Metal Store has ranked metal landmarks from around the globe based on TripAdvisor reviews, monthly search volume figures and the number of Instagram hashtags.

The Kelpies claimed around 277,000 hashtags on Instagram and was ranked higher than the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle – the only other metal landmark in the UK to make the list.

The design, which cost £5 million to build and played a part of the £43 million transformational 864 acre Helix land project between Falkirk and Grangemouth, has been a huge success.

It claimed around 277,000 hashtags on Instagram.  Ranking at 13 was Tyne Bridge in Newcastle. It was the only other metal landmark in the UK to have made the list.

Construction of the Tyne Bridge, which connects Newcastle and Gateshead, started in 1925 and took three years to complete.

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA came in fourth on the survey .

The  Eiffel Tower in Paris, France was top of the list.

The Kelpies, Helix Park, Falkirk, Scotland, the Kelpies are the largest equine sculptures in the world at 100 feet tall , each one is made of 300 tonnes of steel. A time lapse video of the Kelpies being built is on Youtube .

The Helix project created on kilometre of new canal and towpaths, a lagoon and a 16-mile (26km) cycle route around the area.

Falkirk area has over 300 miles of paths and rights of way for walking and cycling.

The John Muir Way is  a 134 mile route from Dunbar to Helensburgh which runs through the Kelpies . The canal runs between the two Kelpies down to the River Forth .
