Visit Jamie Fraser’s ancestral home – Lallybroch . Midhope Castle, a 16th-century tower house, is used as Lallybroch (also known as Broch Tuarach) in Outlander . Left to Jamie by his parents, Brian and Ellen, Lallybroch is also home to Jamie’s sister, Jenny, her husband Ian Murray and their children. With Lallybroch being an important part of the Outlander story, much use is made of Midhope Castle. Phone (+44) 7305-294773 for details and bookings.

2 Doune Castle

Listen to Jamie  as he guides you around Castle Leoch ( Doune Castle ) on the audio tour. Originally dating to the 13th Century, Doune Castle near Stirling was a favourite place for Mary Queen of Scots . Doune Castle has five claims to movie fame –
  • Outlander – Doune was Castle Leoch , and it also features in the 20th century episode when Claire and Frank Randall visit the castle on a day trip.
  • Game of Thrones . Doune represented the castle Winterfell in Game of Thrones.
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail
  • Outlaw King
  • Mary Queen of Scots
Doune Castle / Castle Leoch is where they are filming Blood of My Blood. Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood series has found its lead actors . Filming has begun at Doune Castle in Scotland on Outlander: Blood of My Blood until 22 February , a show that will focus on the parents of the leads in the main series. Once a Royal residence, Doune Castle was rebuilt by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany in the late 14th Century.

Doune Castle Outlander filming for season 8 has completed at the castle .

3 Craigh na Dun

On the south side of the Dunalastair Reservoir in Tay Forest Park under the gaze of  Schiehallion mountain, this is scenic Highlands at its best. You will recognise the mound from the roadside and it’s just a short walk out to the site. Kinnloch Rannoch was used in numerous other scenes , mainly because it’s one of the most remote and beautiful areas in the country. The standing stones in the TV series are set up fro filming , but they are not there permanently . We visit the Clava Cairns , near Culloden , as an example of real standing stones . The mystical and enchanting spot where Claire and Frank first come across the standing stones that soon after were to propel Claire back in time. They have been an ever present since, including in Season four . No standing stones actually exist here

4 Culloden battlefield  – Clan Fraser grave
