Outlander spinoffs
Outlander and the prequel Blood of my Blood have been huge success over the last 10 years , but is there any potential for expanding the Outlander universe with other spinoff shows ? There are lots of options for spinoffs but here’s what I think
🔮 Potential Outlander Spinoffs
1. Lord John Grey Series
- Why it works:
- Gabaldon has already written several Lord John novels and novellas.
- John Grey is a fan-favourite with rich story potential: espionage, court intrigue, military campaigns, his complex relationships with Jamie and his own family.
- Already a fully fleshed-out character — Starz would have ready-made source material.
- Tone: Political thriller meets period drama.
2. The Adventures of Fergus & Marsali
- Why it works:
- Their story as settlers, parents, and survivors could be expanded into a frontier family drama.
- They embody the “next generation” of Fraser’s Ridge.
- There’s scope for humour and grit (Marsali is sharp-tongued, Fergus has a roguish past).
- Tone: A frontier Outlander with a dash of romance and resilience.
3. Young Dougal & Colum MacKenzie
- Why it works:
- Clan MacKenzie politics and power struggles are fascinating.
- A prequel covering their youth, rivalry, and leadership battles would deepen the world’s Highland tapestry.
- Strong potential for darker, Game of Thrones-style intrigue in the Highlands.
- Tone: Dark clan drama, political intrigue.
4. The Jacobite Rising Anthology
- Why it works:
- Not tied to a single character, but instead shows different perspectives of the 1745 Rising and aftermath.
- Could weave in known faces (Dougal, Murtagh, Highland clansmen) while also introducing new ones.
- A broader historical lens would attract both Outlander fans and general history buffs.
- Tone: War and tragedy epic, anthology format.
5. The Beauchamp Family (Claire’s Line)
- Why it works:
- Blood of My Blood is already introducing Claire’s parents.
- Expanding further into their world (spanning World War I & II, archaeology, and time travel hints) could connect the Fraser/Beauchamp strands in new ways.
- Tone: Historical romance with early sci-fi elements.
6. Uncle Lamb’s Expeditions
- Why it works:
- Dr. Quentin Lambert Beauchamp (Uncle Lamb) was an archaeologist, eccentric, and Claire’s guardian.
- His travels and discoveries could tie into the mythology of the standing stones and time travel.
- A natural gateway into broader world-building beyond Scotland.
- Tone: Adventure/archaeology drama (an Indiana Jones-meets-Outlander vibe).
7. The Lovat Line
- Why it works:
- Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat (“The Old Fox”), was a schemer with immense historical weight.
- A spinoff on the Fraser clan politics could expand on loyalties, betrayals, and generational feuds.
- Tone: Dark historical drama about family legacy and power.
8. The Heirs of Fraser’s Ridge
- Why it works:
- A “next generation” continuation, possibly set after the original series’ main arc.
- Could focus on Brianna & Roger’s children (Jemmy and Mandy) and their own adventures across centuries.
- Keeps the Fraser legacy alive for future seasons while introducing younger protagonists.
- Tone: Multigenerational saga with time travel twists.
👉 My top three most viable (from a production and audience standpoint):
- Lord John Grey (already has novels, strong fan demand).
- Uncle Lamb’s Expeditions (ties into the sci-fi/time travel mythology).
- Young Dougal & Colum (clan intrigue and Highland history).
