Braveheart 30th anniversary 3 September

On 3 September 1995, the European premiere of Braveheart — the epic film about Scottish hero William Wallace — took place at the University of Stirling.

Director and star Mel Gibson attended the event alongside key cast members, with a private celebration later held at Stirling Castle. Thousands lined the streets of the city to catch a glimpse of the stars.

More importantly for Scotland, Braveheart introduced the story of William Wallace to a global audience, inspiring a surge in tourism and bringing significant economic benefits to the region.

The film’s influence is perhaps most tangibly felt in Scottish tourism. Braveheart-themed tours, though often informal and blended with general Scottish heritage itineraries, remain popular—particularly among American, Canadian, and Australian visitors. These tours commonly include stops at Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument among other filming locations. Despite most of the movie being shot in Ireland, the Scottish identity tied to Braveheart is strong, and many tourists are surprised to learn of the Irish filming locations. The romanticism and drama of Wallace’s legend, amplified by the film, inspire visitors to explore the real landscapes and historical narratives behind the cinematic myth. Interest in Braveheart tours in Scotland remains high .

Before the film’s release, annual visitor numbers to the National Wallace Monument averaged around 80,000. Between 1996 and 2005, that figure soared to an average of 135,000 per year. Interest has remained strong ever since — in the 2024–25 financial year, 133,297 people visited the Monument, despite it being closed for a month for essential maintenance. The Braveheart effect has given a boost to visitor numbers from 1995 right up until now .

The influence of film on tourism remains clear. VisitScotland’s recent Visitor Survey found that film productions play a major role in inspiring trips, with Braveheart ranking alongside the TV phenomenon Outlander — also filmed in the Stirling area — as one of the top cultural drivers for visitors.

Reflecting on the film’s enduring legacy, Stirling Council Leader Cllr Gerry McGarvey said:
“It’s astonishing that, 30 years on, Braveheart continues to play such a powerful role in attracting visitors to the National Wallace Monument, Stirling, and Scotland as a whole and continuing to generate interest in Braveheart tours in Scotland.
