Filming took place for season 1 at Doune Castle / Castle Leoch in January last year and I was there on set during filming . Most of episode one was filmed at Doune Castle, including the Gathering after the funeral of Red Jacob and the scene where Brian Fraser and Ellen Mackenzie first meet in a chicken coop . The next three episodes also feature Doune Castle a lot as the story of who the next clan chief will be and the relationship between Ellen and Brian unfolds .

Luss, with its stunning views of Loch Lomond and its preserved 18th-century cottages, proved to be an ideal setting for a show steeped in Scottish history and romance. Production crews were seen transforming parts of the village into a historic Highland settlement, complete with costumed extras, horse-drawn carts, and dramatic period details. Locals and tourists alike were treated to glimpses of the cast and the intricacies of a high-profile film set unfolding in real time. Blood of my Blood filming locations have all been in Scotland. The choice of Luss for filming is no surprise. Luss is a conservation village steeped in natural beauty and historic charm, on the shore of Loch Lomond and directly opposite Ben Lomond , providing a rich visual backdrop for the emotion that Blood of My Blood will certainly deliver. The prequel aims to explore the back story of the parents of Claire and Jamie . Filming in such authentic locations enhances the series’ dedication to historical detail and emotional depth.

In the trailer , two riders on horses are speeding past Leathers Castle, real life Balvaird Castle.

Balvaird Castle in Fife was probably built in the late 1400s, with significant additions made in the 1500s. Most tower houses from this period now stand alone in their surroundings. The four-storey tower itself is accompanied by:
inner and outer courtyards
service buildings – now represented mostly by wall footings
a formal walled garden . So far we don’t know what location Balvaird Castle represents in Outlander .
Melville Escapes in Fife features in episode one as the home of Clan Grant. Henry Beauchamp ( Grant ) is taken there to give information about the purchase of some land from another clan . Melville Escapes is a private house and visits can only be made by prior appointment .

Additional filming was carried out in various woodland and rural areas in Perthshire. These natural locations double as Highland forests and remote village settings, offering a rich, immersive atmosphere for the story. The Cumbernauld studios were once again used for interior sets and street scenes, giving producers control over time-accurate recreations of both Highland life and 20th-century England—where Claire’s parents’ storyline unfolds in parallel.
So, will existing fans be interested in Blood of My Blood ? No question about it .
The prequel offers something both new and familiar. While introducing audiences to Brian and Ellen—Jamie Fraser’s parents—it revisits places and themes that made the original series so compelling: clan loyalties, forbidden love, family sacrifice, and the rugged landscape of Scotland itself. For fans who followed Claire and Jamie through the Highlands, this new series offers a deeper understanding of their roots. It’s a return to the origins of the Fraser family and the people who shaped Jamie’s strength, pride, and sense of honour.

The visual continuity—using real locations from the original series—cements Blood of My Blood as an essential part of the Outlander universe. Long-time fans will recognize the look and feel of the show instantly, and new viewers will be drawn in by the timeless romance and dramatic setting. Scotland itself becomes a character once more, with its castles, forests, and glens providing the texture of every scene.

Could the Outlander universe be expanding with a new spinoff show ?
One of the key filming locations is Lallybroch Castle, which will once again return — the ancestral home of the Frasers. This instantly familiar landmark reconnects viewers with the heart of the Highlands, offering a visual and emotional bridge between Jamie Fraser’s story and that of his parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen Fraser . Midhope’s stone walls, dramatic towers, and timeless atmosphere continue to be one of the most beloved Outlander filming sites, and it plays a key role in Blood of My Blood as the backdrop for clan tension and romance.
Bannockburn House served as the home of Lady Nairn and the setting for Jacobite meetings, including one with Rob Roy . The Laigh Hall and the Bonnie Prince Charlie Bedchamber were also used for filming .
Bannockburn House’s interior was used as Lady Nairn’s home in the episode “Luceo Non Uro”.
Blood of my Blood season 2 is being filmed in several locations in Scotland . This year Blood of my Blood season 2 filming has taken place at Doune Castle / Castle Leoch and Balvaird Castle / Castle Leathers.
