The Kelpies visitor guide

The Kelpies Visitor Guide

Located in The Helix Park near Falkirk, Scotland, the Kelpies are one of the most iconic modern landmarks in the country. Standing 30 meters tall, these majestic equine sculptures, the largest in the world were designed by renowned sculptor Andy Scott and pay tribute to the region’s industrial heritage and the powerful, mythic water horses of Scottish folklore.

The Kelpies are part of a larger redevelopment project aimed at connecting communities with art, nature, and history. These magnificent sculptures are a must-see for visitors to Scotland, offering a blend of art, culture, and outdoor activities. Here’s everything you need to know for your visit.

Private tours of the Kelpies and Stirling Castle can be booked online or by phone / Whatsapp on +447305294773

Getting There

The Kelpies are situated between Falkirk and Grangemouth, making them easily accessible from both Glasgow and Edinburgh. By car, it’s about a 40-minute drive from either city. Parking is available at The Helix Park. The first car park is free and the second car park near the front gate requires a ticket . From the car park, it’s a short walk to the sculptures. For those relying on public transportation, there are regular trains and buses to Falkirk, followed by a short taxi or bus ride to The Helix. The nearest train stations are Polmont coming from Edinburgh and Falkirk High coming from Glasgow.

Exploring The Kelpies

Visitors can enjoy the Kelpies in a variety of ways. From the moment you see these enormous horse heads rise against the skyline, you’ll be struck by their scale and intricate detailing. The sculptures reflect the strength and endurance of the horses that once powered the industrial activities along the Forth and Clyde Canal, a theme that resonates deeply with Scotland’s industrial history.

You can view the Kelpies from the outside, but to gain a deeper understanding, consider taking the Kelpies Tour. This guided tour takes you inside one of the sculptures, offering insight into the engineering marvel behind them and the symbolic significance of the design. You’ll also learn about Andy Scott’s artistic process and the massive undertaking involved in bringing these sculptures to life.

Tours are every half hour throughout the day, but it’s recommended to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.

A lagoon offers visitors the chance to go out in a canoe .

One of the highlights of The Helix is the network of paths leading along the canal. You can rent bikes or take leisurely walks along the water, where you might spot some local wildlife. The park also includes a lagoon area that is perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding.
