Doune Castle – Castle Leoch Outlander filming
Doune Castle is instantly recognisable to Outlander fans as Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan Mackenzie. As we note on our site, “Doune Castle has been a key location for Outlander filming as it features as Castle Leoch, home of the Clan Mackenzie.” It has featured heavily in season one of Outlander Blood of my Blood and it will also feature in season two, currently being filmed in Scotland. We will bring you photos of the live film sets from next week
Built in the early 1400s, this medieval stronghold has over 600 years of history. Its mighty walls, great hall, and atmospheric courtyards provide the perfect backdrop for the Jacobite storylines. It’s no surprise the producers chose Doune as one of the show’s most important settings.
Filming for Outlander Season 8 took place at Doune Castle last year , and during our live tour you may even glimpse set preparations or filming activity for the prequel Blood of my Blood . As our website highlights, “filming took place in January last year at Doune Castle – Castle Leoch.” and it returns this month
Culross – Cranesmuir Outlander filming
Our tour also takes you to the historic town of Culross, which doubles as Cranesmuir in Outlander. This beautifully preserved 17th-century village feels like stepping back in time. Cobbled streets, colourful facades, and the impressive Culross Palace make it one of Scotland’s most photogenic locations.
As described on our website, “Visitors can stroll through the town square, visit the impressive Culross Palace, and even imagine themselves as part of the Outlander story.” The square in Culross features in several key scenes, including where Geillis Duncan lived.
Filming for the second season of Outlander Blood of my Blood is set to return here , meaning your visit may coincide with Outlander production crews at work — a rare chance to experience both the authentic history of Culross and its transformation into Cranesmuir.
